Wellness whitley bay aromatherapy – WHAT IS AROMATHERAPY?
Aromatherapy is a holistic treatment that has increased in popularity in recent years. It is the combination of essential oils and a treatment. Using essential oils (EOs) for their Aroma and their therapeutic properties as a treatment to maintain and promote physical, psychological and spiritual wellbeing. Aromatherapy is a truly holistic therapy, and you chose the EOs specifically to work on the physical and emotional needs of each individual client.
wHERE DO ESSENTIAL OILS COME FROM?
Essential oils are derived from plants and are usually obtained by distillation. Not all plants produce EOs and the ones that do don’t always have a pleasant-smelling aroma. Furthermore, you extract the oils from the plant’s leaves, roots, flowers and several other parts of the plant.
Essential oils absorb into our bloodstream via the skin and the respiratory system. The EOs absorb into our fatty skin cells through massage and inhaled into our lungs.
In addition, they then pass through tiny air sacs to the surrounding capillaries by the process of diffusion. Finally, once they are in the bloodstream the aromatic molecules interact with the body’s chemistry.
Plant therapy history

The use of plants (plant therapy) for medicinal purposes dates back to 18000 BC and the plants and their essential oils are documented to have been used throughout the years.
The term ‘Aromatherapy’ was first used in the 1920’s by Dr Rene Gattesfosse (1881 to 1950) a French Chemist who came up with term ’aromatherapie’. His lifetime research into the medicinal benefits of essential oils came about after he accidentally used Lavandula angustifolia (lavender) to treat a burn to his hand. Furthermore, he noticed how quickly it healed and how he was left with little scarring.
He experimented on soldiers during the 2nd World War where he noticed that the use of the essential oils improved the wound healing process due to the ‘Antiseptic’ properties. EOs oils that contain these properties are Lavandula angustifolia (lavender), Thymus vulgaris (thyme), Citrus limon (lemon) and Eugenia caryophyliata (clove). All essential oils are antiseptic and according to Curtis (1996). As a matter of fact, hundreds of laboratory tests have shown just how effective Essential oils can be against bacterial, viral, fungal and parasitic infection.
Later in the 1950s Marguerite Maury (1895 to 1968) an Austrian born biochemist was a pioneer of Aromatherapy. Together with her husband they researched and developed the effects that the essential oils had on the nervous system. In addition, they noted their positive effects on people’s wellbeing.
Robert Tisserand generated a lot of interest in aromatherapy with his book ‘The Art of Aromatherapy’ (1997). He is also the editor of ‘The International Journal of Aromatherapy’ (1988).
